Pride & Prejudice: First Impressions

Hello dear readers – it’s Lisa from Lisa’s Yarns! I’m helping out this week since pinkflipflop certainly has a lot on her mind with the passing of yet another grandparent. L It’s times like this that I wish I could hug a person through her computer.

Have you started reading “Pride & Prejudice” by Jane Austen? I have actually read this book before, but I think it was 4-5 years ago, so I feel like I am reading it for the first time all over again.

Did you know that a previous version of this book was entitled “First Impressions”? Mr. Darcy & Elizabeth Bennet’s first impression of each other plays a major role in this book. The first night Elizabeth Bennet met Mr. Darcy, she overheard him making this comment about her:

“She is tolerable; but not handsome enough to tempt me, and I am in no humour at present to give consequence to young ladies who are slighted by other men…” (p. 14)

Ouch. That’s a pretty rough assessment and must have been hard for Elizabeth to hear. It’s no wonder that she decided at that moment that Mr. Darcy was not someone she would want to associate with.

But sometimes first impressions can be wrong. Will Elizabeth’s impression of Mr. Darcy? I guess you’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Have you ever judged a person based on a first impression and found yourself to be completely wrong?

(Thank you Lisa!! Be sure to check out her blog, but I think most of you already do! )

I haven't started the book yet (I'm starting tonight!) but I'm excited to read it - especially now that you've given us something so soon in the book!

I'm sure I've judged someone based on first impressions - it's really easy to do it in the workplace.

I've been wrong a couple of times. Most memorably was my high school boyfriend. The first time we met, he didn't get my sarcastic sense of humor, so made a sort of rude comment back to me, and I thought he was a total jerk. But then we got to know each other & realized we totally read each other wrong.

When I started reading this in July, I could not believe how RUDE he was. I don't think I made it past chapter 3 at the time. I did start it last night and got to page 3 and had to go to bed. Though, I did want to share how hilarious I think Mr. Bennet is! Mrs. Bennet annoys the crapola out of me and I constantly roll my eyes at her, but the way he humors her cracks me up!!

I sadly do a lot of judging the book by the cover.. :P whoops... I don't think I'm usually too far off though. :)

I read this for the first time a few months ago and loved it. I'm going to have to watch the BBC miniseries again soon :)

My first impressions are almost always wrong. I didn't want to hang out with the girl who turned out to be my best friend, and it's happened that way for a lot of other people too! I just didn't want to have anything to do with them (for some weird reason) but they turn out to be the best friends ever :)
